Digital X-Rays
Digital x-rays have major advantages over conventional film x-rays. They don't require processing, drying and manual archiving. A result can be seen immediately. This is especially useful when doing root canal treatment as the procedure is not delayed. If the instruments need to be adjusted in the tooth, it only takes seconds to get a further picture. The main advantage is that the exposure to any radiation is decreased by 90%. This means that the exposure is so minor that it can be virtually discounted.
X-Rays are necessary to make a proper diagnosis of the teeth and the associated structures. We can only see 3 out of 5 surfaces of the teeth. In order to see between the teeth and detect early decay and avoid root canal treatments or crowns, x-rays are mandatory. They also show us areas of bone loss and inadequate fillings to name a few uses of x-rays.
Two "bitewing" x-rays should be taken about every 2-3 years as a scanning procedure to check the dental structures. A cavity, or gum and bone disease may be present without any detection of pain.
